Happy Halloween!

Here's a quick painting of my eldest daughter in her Mummy getup for today-
Boo!

A quick portrait of my youngest daughter from today - I kind of like the pastel-chalk look.

Just a quick evening portrait tonight - this is the Amazon from Matt Dixon's book.

I used Melanie Delon's smooth2 brush for this - I like it a lot.

Another little project - I decided to do some of John Schindinette's artorders -

http://artorder.ning.com/group/wizar...t-descriptions

I'm doing #2 of the class illustration set that he posted.

The order is as follows -
#1 MALE HALF-ELF SORCERER, in an active pose, facing the viewer. This CLASS ILLUSTRATION should use a format similar to those in the 4e PH.

Male half-elf sorcerer
Features: tanned skin, dark green-black hair.
Armor: Cloth armor, no shield.
Weapon: Holds an ornate brass orb.
Action: Active pose, facing viewer. The sorcerer should look like he’s in the center of a storm of swirling fire, elemental power that originates from him but is almost beyond his control. But very powerful and self-assured.

I kind of dig the way this one turned out. I got pretty discouraged halfway through but it came together reasonably OK.

Not-Terribly-Good portrait of another of my wife's WoW characters. Evening's work, not that happy with it. I'll probably take a crack at it again later and see if I can come up with something better.

Demon Portrait!

Wednesday, October 13, 2010

Photo-study tonight, trying out some other painting techniques. Meh.

Tuesday, October 12, 2010

Working on this week's CHOW for CA - here's my second WIP for this week's topic, 'The Lady of the Lake'.
I went the route of using the Morgan LeFay-leaning version.
Trying some new techniques this time out - did a paper sketch and then a paintover, and I'm playing around with different brush usage JUST a little bit to try and remove some of the 'digital' smoothness and edges. Also for foliage, which, BTW, sucks to paint. Need to get a small, organic brush set sussed out.

A 4 hour piece from today -
Middle School Necromancer! For this week's Sketchclub.

Here's where I'm at so far with my CHOW entry for this week - not sure if I'll make it any farther but I'm reasonably happy with it. Ferret with a fork!

Did an exercise to work on improving my stroke economy tonight. Here it is - kinda just ok. Based on one of the characters in Matt Dixon's nice book.

I decided to do a photo-study tonight for fun. Here goes!

Sunday, October 3, 2010

For fun, I decided to solicit WoW character portraits. This is my take on Jonathan C's (from CA) character.
Learned a lot, but mostly learned to just let go of artistic fidelity to the source material and do what captures the gist - this one is too fiddly on the armor bits and I think it brings it down, as slavishly trying to reproduce them saps some of the life out of things.

Hopefully I'll be doing another one next - it was a fun thing to attempt.
